Jane is free black woman from Virginia, whose
grandmother, a slave, had been manumitted by James Madison after the Revolutionary War.
She and her family barely survived the struggles in her own state during the Civil War and
now, more than anything, wants things to be better for all the people of her race. She
knows that there are many unionists in Virginia who would, as would she, like nothing
better than to return to the country of Washington and Jefferson. But she also knows that
without the support of the Radicals in Congress, her state will never extend full rights
to all African-Americans. |
