Letter to the Teacher

Illustrations and cartoons marked the pages of Harper’s Weekly since its birth in 1857. They are a remarkable resource for scholarship by students at all levels. The three-part activity outlined in this section can introduce students to the importance of close analysis of other than written sources and identification of bias. At the same time it instructs students about the complex issues surrounding the Civil War.
