Larry Lee is a second generation Boston Irishman. He
volunteered for military service with General Meagher during the Civil War and after being
wounded at Fair Oaks returned to his unit immediately after his release from the army
hospital. He believes fervently in his adopted country and his letters home during the war
speak over and over again about his faith in the Union. The Emancipation Proclamation of
Lincoln distressed Lee, whose brother, during a strike in late 1862, lost his job on the
docks in New York to a free black man. He wants the National Government to punish the
South, and has faith that centrists in Congress like Lyman Trumbull will ensure that
blacks only receive limited rights. |
