| The State of Mississippi takes the
lead in the work of self-reconstruction. On the 22d of August the Convention convened by
the call of Governor Sharkey passed an ordinance repealing the ordinance of secession. The
laws passed by the rebel Legislature, except in so far as they conflicted with the United
States Constitution, were reaffirmed and declared valid. On the 24th Governor
Sharkey transmitted to the Convention a telegraphic dispatch received by him from
President Johnson, congratulating the Convention on the progress made by it in paving the
way for the readmission of Mississippi into the Union, and declaring the Presidents
resolution to re-establish the habeas corpus, and to withdraw the soldiers from
the State as soon as the evident loyalty of the State would permitalso his hope that
other States might rapidly follow the example set by Mississippi. The same day the
Convention adjourned, having nominated Judge E.S. Fisher for Governor in the forthcoming
election, and approved of a memorial to President Johnson petitioning him to grant pardon
to Jeff Davis. |
