REPUDIATION
Harper's Weekly, June 17, 1865, page 371 (Article)
The Telegraph has deceived us so often that we decline to believe its report of a late speech of Mr. Wendell Phillips, which makes him say that he advises the American people to repudiate their honest debts. That Wendell Phillips counsels rascality is impossible. He may have said that unless all the loyal freemen at the South are enfranchised the war has been in vain, and is, in a sense, a moral fraud. But that he said that the poor widows and mothers of soldiers, whom we solemnly promised to pay for their services, and who died in the performance of their duty, shall starve, unless the Government enfranchises the colored men in North Carolina, we do not believe. If we are mistaken our readers shall know it.
